Please take time to review Dewees disaster preparedness plan, ready your home, and formulate your own plans.

  • Develop an evacuation plan with your family. Make reservations if necessary. Shelters may not take pets.
  • Check your insurance. Document house contents and store valuables safely.
  • Provide for safekeeping of important documents.
  • Make necessary repairs to the roof and foundation of your home.
  • Put your storm protection system (shutters, plywood, etc.) into place.
  • Move porch furniture and decorations inside.
  • Make preparations to moor, anchor, or store your boat.
  • Move your golf carts to safe locations.
  • Be sure your car is ready for a long journey; keep at least half a tank of gas in your car.
  • Charge necessary communication devices.
  • Prepare evacuation supplies: medications, pet needs, important documents, etc.
  • Know how to turn off power, water, and propane to your home.
  • Get an IOP resident sticker at city hall; after a storm, only cars with stickers will be able to return to IOP.
  • Find a trusted media source for weather and emergency information.
  • Register any member of your household who might need mobility assistance in an evacuation with Dewees Island Public Safety.

Prepare early. Dewees Island staff will be busy preparing community buildings and boats for the storm; if you need assistance preparing your home or property, please arrange for a private contractor. If you wait too long to prepare, the roads on IOP may be closed to incoming traffic.
